Happy November! There’s a writing challenge this month that calls for a post a day! Yikes! But I am committing publicly which means I should make it to…14 Nov? I do think that some days I’ll link back to a July date so I can write “new” posts that are trip catch-ups and then my 2022 goal of blog catch-up will be achieved!
How was your Halloween? Here’s a little collection of decorations at my favorite local coffee shop, St. Franks.
I got crafty on Saturday and made costumes for SMS and I. I wanted to be a qtip, which I thought was very appropriate for an ear-focused ENT! In a testament to how obvious my costume was, absolutely no one guessed what I was. Out of similar materials, I made SMS a candy corn costume. We went to a German-hosted party on Saturday and globalization has not hit the candy corn industry since many people didn’t know what a candy corn was. And they didn’t want to try one either, hahaha. As one guy said, “It will ruin the taste of the beer.”
Isn’t it crazy what candy has international recognition and what doesn’t? Candy corn seems so ubiquitous to me in the US! I listen to a podcast called Off Menu in which two comedians ask folks about their dream meals and I’m always amazed at how often I don’t know what they’re talking about – globalization IS real, but local culture will always win, I guess.
I’m going to look up this podcast. It sounds great and since I have a long commute 2-3 days a week, I’m usually looking for recommendations. Food-wise, I think a large number of cultures have some version of a tortilla/flatbread and dumpling. If I’m scraping bottom later this month, maybe I’ll expand in a post!

As you might have learned already, I am a German in the US and yes, I can attest that Germans generally don’t know what candy corn is. Haha. I love your costumes… and your Q-Tip costume is quite clever.
Thanks San! I didn’t take any pictures at the event, but I was very impressed at the level of decorations at the party. It was like a haunted house.
Hahahaha…. Yes, obviously candy corn and a Qtip (I think candy corn comes across a little more obviously, but that’s okay!) Sounds like you guys had fun.
Ooo, thanks for the obviously! We had to explain our costumes a lot. I think next year I’ll try to be a little more pop-culture savvy so I can make a costume that people will i.d. and think I’m cool (hahaha).

He’s not wrong. I was eating it while drinking an overly sweet pumpkin beer so not much was lost. I think the only pumpkin beer I like is the one from Dogfish Head, DE (Delaware, not Germany).

My German nieces looked very puzzled when I mentioned candy corn for the first time. Did you know it was called chicken feed at first? Maybe you can bring another candy stash next year and dress up as chickens 😉

Candy corn is not much of a thing in Canada. We can buy it here, but it’s not very popular and I have to admit I’ve never been a fan. It feels like a love/hate type of candy? I feel the same way about Tootsie Rolls – UGH, but I know people who absolutely LOVE it.
The costumes are both FAB; the Q-tip is genius and I love how it ties into your professional life. So fun.
And now I’m back to thinking about candy – haha.
I’m just shocked at how much I used to love candy corn and the corresponding amount that I ate. It’s just dyed pure sugar! Yuck, but also sort-of-yum?
