Presidio Tunnel Tops & Ft Point

Walking along the shore, Crissy Field

In the beginning of December, SMS and I went into the city for lunch and a walk. We ate at one of our favorites, Kantine. The menu had changed since we were last there several months ago and, unfortunately, the sampler platter is gone. But we had delicious open-faced sandwiches so the food is still on point.

Afterwards, we headed to the Presido to check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops, a new-ish (2022) park that connects the Presidio to Crissy Field. It’s a gorgeous space with fantastic views, lots of seating, grassy areas, and a cool playground that kids were enjoying. I thought it was slightly bigger than it turned out to be, but it is a great connector of the previously separated spaces and the multi-tiered landscaping was creative. I recommend checking it out!

We walked along the shore, which was a little more distance than I thought we were going to walk. We checked out the Warming Hut Park Store and I was all set to turn back. It had been a great walk! We saw the Golden Gate! I was so happy! But SMS looked askance! Didn’t I see the building under the Golden Gate Bridge that looked super cool. Yes! And, I didn’t want to walk anymore, lol. But SMS appealed to my normal sense of wanting to see all the things and off we went.

It was so worth it! It turned out to be Ft. Point, a Civil War-era fort that pre-dates the bridge. The brick building is so well-maintained and absolutely breath-taking. All the different textures- brick, steel, bridge- combine into spectacular visuals. I absolutely loved it. It was the highlight of the day! It’s now going on one of my top recs for the city, overall.

Even though we walked, there are rental scooter and bike options as well as just driving up and parking. The day was gorgeous so I’m glad we did the walk but there are definitely alternative ways of getting there.

A ladybug friend!

There was also a small exhibit in two rooms that went over the bridge planning, funding, building, and major upkeep projects over the years. It was super easy to take in and really interesting. I absolutely love it. Ft Point! 5 Stars!!
