NaBloPoMo 2024: Day 14

Desserts! The shave ice/ice crystals was my favorite!

Yum, I had the best dinner last night during a candidate interview. Free food always tastes better and it was a real treat to hang out with three of my colleagues and, hopefully, a future colleague! We went to Copra in SF, which was a South Indian restaurant that serves its dishes family-style. With a group of 5, this allowed us to try a lot of different dishes.

Several of the dishes were more regional so I hadn’t heard of a few things prior to my looking up some items on the menu, pre-dinner. I ordered an appam, which was a coconut batter “crepe” with spices and a soft boiled egg that was spread over the dough. It was really interesting- the outer edges were crisp while the center was more crepe/soft-doughy texture.

Our appetizers were fantastic: shrimp skewer, fried peppers (had been sold as our “vegetable” but definitely more french fry level of nutrition than brussels sprout), a spicy pouri, and fried chicken. Our mains were a hamachi collar, lamb, and cod. It was all super delicious. If I were to go back, I think I’d order the vegetable of the day, which are three preparations served with rice. Oh, yeah! The rice! It was so good- moist, not dried out, and one had some diced dried pineapple (I think?) that really complimented one of the fish dishes.

I had one of the mixed drinks. It was delicious. Would have had two but you know, school night/work event/driving…many reasons not to! I was already so excited and happy to talk to people that I didn’t need any drinks for social disinhibition, lol.

After talking to one of my colleagues, I think I’ll go to the sleep medicine course where she’s teaching. It’s in Orlando at one of the Disney hotels near Epcot. I’m not a “Disney adult,” but I think I would stay a day or two longer to go to Disney World. It is worth it for a casual visit, or is it too crazy/lightening pass/Disney-as-a-competitive-sport vibe?

  1. What’s a sleep medicine course? Where you learn how to sleep better?

I’d go to any Disney place any day, but have never been. I’m sure it’s crazy busy but maybe worth it for the experience.

    1. An experiential sleep better course would be amazing. Everyone comes in pajamas, lots of chamomile tea, breathing exercises, mindfulness, lots of lavender aromatherapy…I think this could be a thing!!!

But what I meant was a conference where we talk (mostly) about obstructive sleep apnea and the surgical and non-surgical management of it. Less fun, less pajamas.

  2. Disney is not my vibe. I’ve been 3 times, and the first time was AWESOME because it was Grad Night, only graduating seniors from CA high schools from closing time to opening time the next day. No parents, no kids. Perfect. The other two times were tiring, long lines, crying kids, blah. To me it’s Vegas for kids, and somehow Santa Cruz is 100x better and more relaxed. I have a lot of friends who LOVE IT, so I will be interested to hear what you think. I hope you have an amazing time and prove me wrong.

  3. Those plates are gorgeous! How fun to try such a cool restaurant.

I haven’t been to any Disney property as an adult, mainly because it all sounds so daunting. I think if you have a course to attend while there, it would take the pressure off and allow you to enjoy it more!

  4. Yum, that dinner sounds delicious. And it was free! 🙂

A sleep medicine course. Interesting. What do you learn there?

    1. Mostly treating sleep apnea, since there are surgical treatment options. As an ENT surgeon, we don’t do as much with non-surgical conditions such as restless leg or insomnia. There’s a lot of co-existing issues though, so we have to know about them.
