Earlier this month, I celebrated my birthday! What age, you ask? Well, rude but if I had to translate from Chinese, it would result in double death. So with that, I leave you the above note from a hospital (won’t say which one!).

Although I mentioned a hospital above, I wasn’t there because since I’ve graduated my post-graduate medication education, I’ve always taken my birthday off. It’s my treat to myself. One time I expressed my surprise to my colleague that she was working on her birthday and she said, “So what? It’s just my birthday. It’s not like I’m five.” Well, I’m not five either (see: double death), but I do like to take my birthday off!

I walked to Palo Alto and went to my favorite Japanese onsen-style place, Watercourse Way. I had a great room with a hot tub, cold plunge, and steam room. Afterwards, I went to Onigilly for onigiri, which were so tasty.

It was a pretty mellow day and I had the best time. That evening, SMS took me out to Flea St, a local restaurant with delicious food. Happy birthday to me! Also, does anyone else feel that one of the most post-COVID, COVID-is-over things that happens now is that we’re back to blowing out candles on a cake? Think about it, it’s so gross!
I like to take my birthday off, too. It’s a do nothing day! Happy birthday to you!
Happy belated birthday. I love that you took the day off – I’ve been doing this for a few years, too and I think it should be mandatory!
It looks like you had a wonderful birthday! I used to have to work on my birthday because it’s New Years Eve and I worked in hotels. Ever since, though, I’ve been able to get the day off, even if my family has to work. I agree about the candles. GROSS. I swore I’d never do it again. And yet, here we are. Doing it again.
