NaBloPoMo 2024: Day 4

Banyan Tree, Doris Duke’s Shangri-La, Oahu

I feel inspired to make little rules. For example, for my daily posts where I have not taken any relevant photos, I will treat you to a photo from my travels. I am not the best at seeing these rules through, but it sounds good for a day or so.

My favorite in-laws left today. Boo! They headed back after realizing they weren’t going to get their car back anytime soon. They’re “in queue” for a battery and estimated wait times are in the weeks, not days. So, they took the Tesla X Plaid. I never got to try high-performance drag strip mode but that may be for the better since I could see myself over-correcting and driving off the road. Fast. And that would hurt.

Unfortunately for them, they are stuck dealing with the world’s stupidest doors. Seriously, our entire group was befuddled by the doors all weekend. How do they open? Don’t ask us because we barely muddled through. I tried to look up a tutorial but it seemed like we were doing it right so who knows?

I had two OR cases today, which were fun. Then I did some charting and research work through the afternoon. I was supposed to have a third case but the insurance auth didn’t come through. Infuriating. These companies 100% slow-roll things, which is so disruptive to the patient and to OR scheduling and flow. I recently read on Linked-In that insurance companies aren’t to blame, but the employers in terms of what benefits are covered by their plans. In fairness, this was in relation to prescription medications but either way, it is completely ludicrous to me that anyone wouldn’t put a LOT of the current dysfunction blame directly onto the laps of insurance companies. Record profits, ridiculous administrative hoops, and gate-keeping are the names of their games. Single-payer: seriously, it’s the way to go. If it’s good enough for the VA and US military (not exactly liberal bastions), then it’s good enough as a viable system in the US.

  1. Regarding single payer – AMEN SISTER.
Regarding Banyan Trees, I LOVE THEM. So very very cool. The first one I saw was near the aquarium/zoo on Oahu, and then the huge one on Maui, which seems to be recovering from the fire last year, thank goodness.

  2. That tree is stunning.
I am not all too familiar with the American health care system but it seems infuriating. While we are pretty well covered here it is still a struggle at times who is taking care of what cost. I remember my husband needing surgery and we had to figure out all the paperwork prior and he needed to wait with a busted eye.

  3. One time I was on a plane and I could not figure out the seatbelt. THE SEATBELT. I felt really dumb. Sometimes it’s the things we use on a daily basis that we take for granted, isn’t it?
