I love my job. I also love vacations! A few days ago, I reviewed my plans for the first half of 2025 so that I could block my work schedule appropriately. It is important to block clinic days well in advance to avoid a scramble of cancellations and rebookings by the practice coordinator. It’s also important to see if I have any Tuesdays that need hospitalist coverage from the faculty on call that week. Finally, if I’m missing a Monday OR, the scheduler needs to release the day so my utilization percentage doesn’t get docked.
For the first half of 2025, it looks like I have a sleep conference in February and two US vacations in April and June. In April, I’m going to celebrate my sister’s (belated) 40th birthday in CA and then go to HI for a few days. Then in June, SMS and I are going to road trip in Oregon the week before my cousin’s wedding. That adds up to 12 vacation days, but between my current leave balance and future accruals, I’ll still have 15 days on 6/30. I like to have a few days buffer in case of unexpected time away, but that’s still a pretty healthy leave balance!
Although there’s no rush, I’m going to check out SMS leave balance, which is low since he started a new job somewhat recently. But maybe we can calculate what would be a feasible time away in Fall ’25. I’m thinking two weeks, Europe. While he doesn’t know what I’m specifically thinking yet, he knows I’m always trying to figure out when to travel next. So, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.
Another possibility is going to an otolaryngology conference in Cambodia and tacking on vacation afterwards. I thought Siem Reap was a once-in-a-lifetime visit, but maybe it will a two-peat!
Such wonderful plans! We haven’t talked about whether we’re going on vacation next year. I hope so. I’ve never been to Asia, that picture of the tree in Cambodia is beautiful.
Thanks! It was a pretty amazing temple- the forest was reclaiming the temple.
Lovely to be able to schedule some fun trips that far in advance (I don’t have to schedule leave that early, but sometimes that helps you plan ahead!)
Oh I love dreaming of vacations and I am a sucker for making a trip somewhere and tacking vacations at them. A conference in Cambodia is so random to me though. But what an adventure. And then Europe… so many places to go and see.
Since I am freelancing full time I can go and do what ever I want. But the husband owns a company and he often has to cancel his blocked time because of important pitch meetings and staff shortages. We had planned to take Dec 15th to Jan 3 (and he wanted off until Jan 10th) but now he has two major projects due on Jan 21 so here goes another vacation. Sigh.
Argh! Work getting in the way of vacations, boo. But I get it. Priorities. Very adult!
